Top 10 web directories

September 23rd, 2007 by Pankaj

Web directories can be powerful in helping ranking in the search engines but be wary as there are many to choose from. They are literally thousands of web directories out there but only a few carry real weight in Google. Going for the cheaper options for your sites will probably not bring the result you would wish over the long term.

I would always emphasise the phrase ‘quality over quantity’ for any SEO campaign.

My favourite top 10 directories are:

  1. Yahoo Directory: US$299.00 non-refundable annual fee. Many categories are very, so be careful where you submit.
  2. Business.com: $199/year price. Pr 7 has over 65,000 categories. It is a very powerful directory- one of the few directories that actually might send you traffic.
  3. BOTW: $79.95 annually recurring review fee. $239.95 one-time review fee.
  4. Skaffe.com: $44.99 fee. Permanent. Quality trusted directory. Have many crowded categories so try to find a less congested place to submit your link.
  5. Goguides.org: $69.95 Again categories can be very crowded.
  6. Massivelinks.com: $24.99 also has a basic plus listing that offer 5 more deep links
  7. Joeant.com: $39.99 ( free for editors)
  8. STPT: PR7 web directory. Expensive at $99 per year however likely to carry weight in Google.
  9. Alive Directory: Offers permanent and yearly listing offers. For regular/ yearly the price is $49.95 per year and permanent $149.95.
  10. Aviva Directory: It not just offers quality links but also has plenty of good quality content. Regular links are $49.99 per year.

When a submitter will enter a correct coupon code, he will be eligible to get some discount on the review price The amount of discount can be either fix (e.g. $2.99) or a percentage amount (30%), which can be set from PHPLD admin section.

Life of Directories on Expired Domain

May 25th, 2007 by Pankaj

I have collected a list of directories which were announced last month at DigitalPoint forums. About 30 % of those new directories were on expired domains with PageRank 1-4. Since most of new directories offer free review for regular listings, so, I thought submitting to such directories, I may get some advantages over other new directories which have no PageRank.

So, I began to submit to the directories which have some PR. But I surprised finding that 70 % of such directories were just deleted. Most of the domains were parked at domain parking sites or have site with different niche.

What are the aims of such domain owner? Why are they starting a directory and after one or two weeks they deletes them? Here are few answers of the question:

  • In this way they might just want to make some quick dollars, nothing else. These types of directories take few bucks for featured listing and after few days just shut down their directory.
  • One another reason could be that they find it hard to maintain a directory.
  • They got another niche from which they can get more money then directories.
  • Or, simply, sold the domain.

So, if you are submitting your site to directory which is on expired domain avoid submitting your site as featured listing. You may lost what you are spending for the featured listing.

Submitting new site to hundreds of directories: Good or Bad?

April 2nd, 2007 by Pankaj

I am providing quality directory submission service on various webmasters forums and have some good feedback. My clients always ask me various questions regarding directory submissions. One of those questions is:

“I have new site and want to submit it to 500 directories. Will my site penalized by search engines for having 100s of back links in short period?”

I never said I am SEO expert but for client satisfaction I searched on various webmasters forum and search engines. Here is what answer I got:

All directories don’t activate your links on same time. A directory takes 2 days to 6 weeks, even 6 months to approve and activate a link. So, all back links from directories may takes up to 6 months to be active.

Let if 20% of your links approved in first week and cached by search engines then you will get 100 back links from 500 submissions. If the site is old and already has some back links then it’s not any issue but may be problem for new sites.

So, I will say that you should not use more then 200 submissions for your new site. First go for 200 submission plan, and then wait few days till back link updates. Then you can choose 500 or more submissions plans.

It is personal thoughts maybe I’m wrong. Expert’s thoughts are welcomed on this topic.

Web Directoy or Link Farm ??

February 27th, 2007 by Pankaj

link-farmWe all know that how directories help us to get a useful relevant back links. But now web directories are also known as links farms.

Though there are few quality free directories but we can’t expect quality from free directories, Because they can’t spen too much time/money on reviewg each submissions.
But what about paid directories?? To maximize their profits paid directories sells lots of featured links, regular links, sidebar sponsored links, footer links, etc, etc.. and ends with 40/50 links per page. Which is enough to be defined as a link farm and these links gets no value from search engines.

So, What would you say- Directories are link farms or not??
